Health & Wellness

Obesity is a growing health concern among indoor cats, primarily due to limited physical activity and overfeeding. As responsible cat parents, taking daily steps to prevent obesity can help your feline friend live a longer, healthier life.

1. Portion Control is Key

Free-feeding can easily lead to overeating. Instead, feed your cat set portions at specific times during the day. Choose high-quality, protein-rich cat food and avoid excess treats. Always check the feeding guidelines on your cat’s food label and adjust based on your cat’s weight and age.

2. Engage in Daily Playtime

Indoor cats lack the natural stimulation of outdoor environments. Create daily play sessions using toys like feather wands, laser pointers, or motorized mice. Aim for at least 15–30 minutes of active play each day to help burn calories and prevent boredom.

3. Create a Stimulating Environment

Make your home cat-friendly. Install climbing shelves, scratching posts, and puzzle feeders. These not only keep your cat active but also mentally engaged, reducing the risk of stress-related eating.

4. Monitor Weight and Body Condition

Weigh your cat monthly and keep track of any changes. You can also check their body condition by feeling for ribs—if you can’t easily feel them, your cat may be overweight. Consult your vet for a proper weight management plan.

5. Avoid Human Food

It’s tempting to share snacks, but human food often contains too many calories and unhealthy ingredients for cats. Stick to a balanced feline diet.

Preventing obesity in indoor cats is a daily commitment, but the reward is a happy, active, and healthier companion. A few mindful changes to your routine can make a big difference in your cat’s well-being.
